About
Curious Theatre Review is for people who enjoy live performance and want more ways to understand what they are seeing. We explore how scripts, actors, design and theatrical customs work together, with room for different readings of the same moment.
The work behind the moment
A pause can change the temperature of a scene. A prop can gather meaning as it passes from hand to hand. A stage may ask an audience to imagine a whole world from a few well-placed objects. We look at these choices and explain what they can do, without treating any single interpretation as final.
For curious audiences
You do not need specialist knowledge to join in. Our pieces are written for the theatregoer who wants to notice more, the reader meeting a play on the page, and anyone curious about how theatrical conventions came to be. We favour clear explanations, specific examples and questions readers can carry into another performance.
A lively, open-minded read
Theatre is made in particular places and circumstances, and no short explanation can settle every question a performance raises. We distinguish what a script says from what a production might choose, and leave room for disagreement, surprise and a good discussion on the way home.
